Across the river (part 2)

Abel took his nap at 2nd uncle's house while Noel is feasting on ice cream with his 'little' uncle and aunt. - they are Jake's cousins.

Trip across river

Usually our trip back to Sibu is super hectic. There're so many relis to visit. We went to see Jake's granny and 2nd and 4th uncle who live in Engkilo. (Across the river) it is about 30-35 minutes drive.

Rejang Esplanade

Kompia (foochow bagel)

You can spot a Sibu-rian anywhere in the world when you see they have frozen kompia in their freezer. Often these 'bagel' like food have been gifted by good friends who had made a trip back to Sibu or had been personally lugged over when one traveled back themselves.  

 

Here, a young 'master' was making the kompia in a special oven.  Note there's a special fan and the kompia were baked by charcoal fire. The dough are stuck on the wall of the oven. They are delicious eaten when they just came out of the oven. We had to wait several minutes for our freshly out of oven batch.

Flower biscuit -childhood snack

These flower biscuit evoked childhood memories.  We used to buy them from the corner grocery store (杂货店) and they are filled in those vintage looking glass bulk bin type container.

Now all those stores have died down replaced by chain grocery stores.

 

Anyways in Rejang park there is still one shop selling these sort of biscuits in the old fashioned bulk bin. We bought some to show Noel what we used to snack on.

Dinner @ Kheng Hock

Yellow fire hydrant

Noel made an observation that in Sibu (later in other parts of Malaysia) fire hydrants are painted yellow, not Red.
Good observation, Noel. He insists on having a photo taken with a fire hydrant.

Jien Luk (chendol) and Chai Pia at Hoho Coffee Shop

We love the jien luk at Hoho coffee shop.  There's generous amount of shaved ice and evaporated milk, red beans, etc. YUMMMMMM it's best to have them on the hot afternoon.

We went there and the owner's son was making chai pia too (See below). Of course we had to order some.

Abel tried the chai pia. Soon both boys polished the plate of chai pia.

The boys went on many of these rides while they were in Sibu. 

Aloha, here we come

After some serious shopping at Wisma Sanyan, our stomachs were rumbling and it's time for lunch again.  We went to Aloha because I wanted to eat the cha kuay tiaw from the guy who used to operate at the coffeshop in sarawak house only to found out he's sold out :S

we ordered laksa, kampua (and a pien sik arrived instead which we ate anyways while waiting for the kampua to arrive)

 

we ordered the char kuay teow from the other shop and also ordered a chao chai mi hun.  

To top all that off, we ordered a roti canai telur.

hehehehe...it's hard not to put on weight in our short  visit.

Drop in

After breakfast, we dropped into godma's law chamber :) hehehehe ..It's a shame we didn't have any decent photos taken. We were too busy yakking and the boys were busy conversing about something too.

One of mom's friends recommended this coffee shop to her.  The shop's famous for fried tong-fen and fried kampua and kuaytiaw fried with pig stomach.  So above pic was the kuay tiaw with pig stomach.  I met my cousin who works in an office above the coffee shop who joined us for breakfast.

Jake ordered the Cha Chu Mein with "he bao dan".

Fried tong fen and below is fried kampua.  They are not extraordinary but definitely something different to have than the typical kampua and what not.

I can't remember the name of the coffee shop but it's a corner lot  before the roundabout into Tong Sang Road on the left and it's side is opposite a curtain shop . Hopefully this direction makes sense.

Late night supper @ tmn muhibbah

it's not like we weren't full from Ming Mei Shi but after dropping the boys with my parents, we went out for a drive and after detour to the new bus terminal, we found our way to Tmn Muhibbah.
We bought some Cds from the CD shops before getting ourself some supper.



We ordered some deep fried kumaras [above pic] (it was disappointing) 

Fortunately these satays were good and the guy didn't have much left.  We subsequently went back to Tmn Muhibbah twice but each time they've already run out of SATAYS. Grr..it's frustrating!

Conclusion: We decided now we will only go there for SATAYS.
